The tree is a Dunlap Pear tree. They usually live about thirty years. This tree is now forty years old. The tree originally grew in an area adjacent to where it is now and on the other side of the North Tower of the Twin Towers. The tree had a problem growing and was leaning over on a fence and had stunted growth on one side...that actually resulted in the tree's survival. The tree was found three weeks after the 911 attack miraculously still growing amongst the debris and so it was moved and nurtured back to life again. It was eventually moved to its current spot near the pools at the World Trade Center Memorial Site. The tree has become a symbol of survival...A book has been written about the tree and seeds have even been sent around the world as symbolic gestures of support for survival for others.
