America's largest home. This is definitely a home built for entertaining. The Home took six years to build and welcomed guests with an extravagant Christmas Eve party in 1895.
The original property included more than 125,000 acres. Much of the property was farmland but Vanderbilt hired the father of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted, to design the use of the grounds. Olmsted advised Vanderbilt to plant a forest on the land...and now the magnificent woods dominate the majestic grounds as far as the eye can see.
